Volunteer at Hospice of the Fisher Home
Volunteers play an essential role at Hospice of the Fisher Home, providing companionship, comfort, and practical support to our patients and their families. Trained volunteers support the daily operations of our 9‑bed residential hospice and visit patients living in the community. Some volunteers also share healing arts such as massage, Reiki, music, and pet therapy. Every day, the presence of volunteers makes a profound difference at the end of life.

Veteran Volunteers
The Fisher Home volunteer program is especially interested in welcoming veterans who are willing to provide companionship to our veteran patients. Shared life experience and camaraderie can offer deep comfort and connection at the end of life.
Volunteer Roles
Patient Support Volunteers
At this time, we are only recruiting and training Patient Support Volunteers—individuals interested in patient‑facing volunteer work.
Patient Support Volunteers assist with a variety of practical and relational tasks within the residence while also spending meaningful time with patients. Responsibilities may include preparing meals at the hospice, helping with light household tasks, and offering companionship to residents. Patient Support Volunteers also visit patients living in the community, providing presence, conversation, and emotional support to both patients and their families.
This role is centered on relationship‑based care and creating a warm, supportive environment for patients at the end of life.
Patient Support Volunteer training is comprehensive and follows state and national hospice guidelines. Training includes:
-
Three in‑person classroom sessions
-
Five hours of online training
-
Two, two‑hour shadowing shifts
-
Two, two‑hour shadowing shifts
Beginning in 2027, Patient Support Volunteer trainings will be offered twice per year, in March and September.
Ancillary Volunteers
In the past, the Fisher Home has also welcomed Ancillary Volunteers who supported the residence through tasks such as meal preparation, errands, clerical work, and general household support. At this time, we are pausing recruitment and training for ancillary volunteer roles and are not accepting new ancillary volunteer applications.
Screening and Commitment
All volunteers complete a screening process, which includes:
-
An application
-
An interview
-
Reference checks
-
A background check
A TB test (available at the Fisher Home) and full COVID‑19 vaccination (initial series) are also required. We ask that volunteers commit to at least two hours per week for a minimum of one year (or one academic year for students at local colleges).
Upcoming Volunteer Trainings
The next two Patient Support Volunteer trainings will begin in June and September 2026.
-
There are 15 spots available in each training (30 total).
-
There will be one shared application period for both trainings.
